Happy Birthday Elijah!

Yesterday at 4:35 p.m., I left Jackson and drove to Longview, Texas. Today at 2:10 p.m., I left Texas and drove back to college here in Mississippi. What would induce me to do such a whirlwind trip? The love of my brother...

Today my older brother Elijah turned 20 years old. As with his past two birthdays, I packaged up a birthday present and sent it off earlier this week, sad at the thought of not being able to celebrate with him. The thought of going to see him never crossed my mind, until I received an email from my mom on Thursday, asking if I'd like to drive and see Elijah for his birthday, since it was on a Saturday. I emailed back and told her that I couldn't, as I was required to be at "strike" (taking down the set) on Saturday night following the last "Ecclesiastes" performance. But as the day wore on, I thought about how I would like to see Elijah, and that 4 1/2 hours of driving each way wasn't too bad... After my last class I called my Mom and we began to make plans.

Since Elijah has never been given a surprise birthday party, I decided that I wanted to show up expectantly. I got in contact with a girl who also goes to LeTourneau, and she graciously met me on the campus last night to show me where Elijah's apartment was, and let me stay overnight with her.

I arrived on the campus of LeTourneau University around 9 p.m. on Friday, after 4 1/2 hours of straight driving. I couldn't wait to see Elijah's face when I walked in, and I wasn't disappointed! It was such a joy to see his look of astonishment and be able to say, "Happy early birthday!" =)

We talked and played "Boggle" that night; we went out for breakfast this morning; we drove around and planned what we'd do to celebrate; then we went bowling with 4 of his friends from college. We enjoyed the cake I'd bought from Walmart (I wanted to make one, but didn't have time!) and went out for lunch.

Too soon, I had to leave again... He had a meeting he had to go to, and I had to drive back in time for "strike." The drive back was harder than the drive there; I began missing him again soon after I left. But, I am so grateful for the time I got to spend with him, celebrating his "golden birthday" as he turned 20 on September 20th. These are memories we won't forget.

I love you, Elijah! Hope this year is the best one yet! Can you believe that we're so old?? :-)

I enjoyed talking with you, Anna. You still had a long drive ahead of you when I said goodbye.

Miriam Rebekah: Yes, I got really tired of driving soon after I hung up with you. But... God gave strength to make it back, though I was really tired of sitting and my leg was cramping up by teh end!

Mardi: That's neat! I know a lot of people with September birthdays - 3 in my family, in fact!

Michele: Yes it did! I was so happy! =)

Elijah: I'm glad you enjoyed it! I so enjoyed seeing you. Thanks for taking out time to be with me. =)

Alexis: The drive was worth it when I got there. Being with family is so encouraging!

Laura: Yes, my brother and I are close, as you can probably tell. Brothers (and sisters, of course!) are wonderful!

Jen: Me too! Thanks for praying!

Ella: I would have preferred making the cake, and for a time I thought I might be able to, but in the end I preferred to have more time to be with Elijah then to spend time baking. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. The cake from Walmart was only $4 though, and was actually quite delicious! Especially when eaten with hands off of napkins at a bowling alley... ;-)

That was nice of you to drive out and surprise your brother on his birthday!

It's good to see the close relationship you and your brother have.It reminds me of Polly from An Old-Fashioned Girl and the quote about her brother Jimmy that"He loved me dearly and wasn't ashamed to show it".
